Long Term Disability

An accident or illness can strike anyone at anytime. If you are unable to work because of a disabling sickness or injury, disability insurance can protect your most important asset - your income. That's why the University of Tennessee offers optional group Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage to meet your needs. This is your opportunity to protect yourself and your family against disability - related financial difficulties. Your LTD benefits provide you with loss of income protection if you become disabled from a sickness, pregnancy, or accidental bodily injury. Once your claim is approved by the insurance company, your benefits begin after you have been disabled for 120 consecutive days (known as the elimination period).

Affordable Protection For Your Pay Check

Regular employees who are scheduled to work a minimum of 30 hours a week may participate in the basic group insurance program. Faculty and other academic employees must be scheduled to work at least 75 percent time in order to meet eligibility requirements. Additionally, employees who are scheduled to work at least 70 percent time (1450 hours per year) and who have been employed as a regular employee for 24 months will be eligible to participate in the group insurance program.  If you choose to enroll in a Long Term Disability plan the enrollment must be made within 31 days after becoming eligible. Evidence of Insurability will not be required.  Please contact the Insurance department at 865-974-5251 to enroll at that time.

If you chose not to enroll in a long term disability plan within 31 days of becoming eligible, you can still elect to apply through Late Enrollment.  You will need to contact the Benefits & Retirement office for the late enrollment form and provide Evidence of Insurability.
